| SRI RAGHAVENDRA | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Born to Tammanna Bhatt and his wife Gopamma in the 16th Century, as a result of a boon granted by the Lord of Tirupati Sri Venkateswara, the Saint of Mantralayam was named Venkatnath. Sri Raghavendra's (as he came to be known after attaining sainthood) ancestors hailed from the now reorganized states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. With the fall of the Vijayanagar empire, patronage for the arts and vedic scholars also disappeared. Tammanna who was a great scholar and violinist and veena player in the royal court lost his means of livelihood. He took to coaching students in Sanskrit and the Vedas to support his family.
